    Freshwater Ecologist

    Location

    Work from home, with travel to meetings and to deliver training as required.
    Type

    3 year contract, Full time working. Salary: £27-30k, depending on experience.
    Description

    WildFish are looking for an experienced freshwater ecologist/entomologist to work within our SmartRivers programme. SmartRivers is a scientifically robust, nationwide citizen science scheme that is helping to fill the gap in national monitoring. It provides high-resolution macro-invertebrate monitoring, which is invaluable evidence in the fight to protect our river and their wild fish populations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Analysis and interpretation of macro-invertebrate monitoring results
    • Aquatic macro-invertebrate identification and training support for volunteers, including in-person workshops nationwide.
    • Auditing of quality control freshwater macro-invertebrate samples analysed to species-level by volunteers and providing feedback to volunteers to improve their identification skills.
    • Support campaign colleagues using the data produced by SmartRivers to drive action on local campaigns
    • Support with data processing and reporting
    • Present SmartRivers data to external stakeholders
    • Provide scientific input for internal briefings, policy reports and consultation responses
    • Support the team in its work with external stakeholders including NGOs, industry and government bodies.

    Requirements

    • Up-to-date knowledge of aquatic ecology, especially macro-invertebrates, and pressures on UK water bodies.
    • Good understanding and use of nationally appropriate sampling and analytical tools.
    • An understanding of how data relating to the aquatic ecology, habitats and species of the UK is managed
    • Self-motivated and prepared to take the initiative and manage your own workload.
    • Able to lead meetings and represent the organisation externally.
    • A confident communicator, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Minimum BSc degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
    • Comfortable working remotely but prepared to contribute to regular team meetings.
    • Have a willingness to travel, with driving licence and vehicle.

    Campaigns Researcher

    Location

    Work from home, with travel to meetings and to deliver training as required.
    Type

    Full time, 3-year fixed term contract. Salary: £25,000
    Description

    We are looking for a bright and personable individual who is passionate about improving aquatic habitats and achieving healthy wild fish populations to join our policy and campaigns team to provide evidence for action. The role will involve researching a range of water quality pressures from agriculture, water companies and industries, to over-abstraction and salmon farming.

    The role will include:

    • working with our policy team to devise and develop our campaigns on a range of issues impacting wild fish populations at local, regional and national level
    • desk-based research, and helping to compile evidence and case studies to inform our lobbying
    • building links with external stakeholders.
    • helping provide supporters with the information they need to engage with the decision-making process.

    Important qualities

    • Experience of synthesising scientific data and communicating them into impactful communications.
    • A confident communicator, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Prepared to take the initiative and manage your own workload.
    • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline
